Unveiling a unique initiative in the gaming community
The Eve Online team has launched an intriguing project that goes beyond typical gaming promotions. At this year’s Eve Fanfest, CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson announced an ambitious plan to create a lasting tribute to the game: an epic poem crafted on authentic parchment, inspired by the ancient sagas of Iceland. This isn’t just a publicity stunt; players are literally being asked to donate their blood to the cause.
While the notion of donating blood might sound alarming, the team reassures players that this initiative is rooted in a blend of artistic ambition and charitable goals. The project aims to immortalize the rich history of Eve Online in a unique way that connects players to the game’s legacy.
A poetic journey through history
According to Pétursson, the idea of using blood as a medium for storytelling isn’t entirely new. He references historical practices where information was preserved on calfskin, a method used in Iceland over a millennium ago. As part of this project, celebrated Icelandic author Andri Snær Magnason will pen the poem, drawing inspiration from a variety of cultural traditions worldwide.
The poem will encapsulate pivotal moments, ideas, and themes from the experiences of Eve Online players. This creative endeavor aims to resonate deeply with the game’s community, creating a connection that spans generations.
Preserving the past for the future
What makes this project even more remarkable is the intention to produce a limited number of handmade manuscripts. Crafted by skilled artisans, these manuscripts will reflect a medieval aesthetic, emphasizing the historical significance of the work. One notable artisan has an impressive background, having collaborated with the Papacy and the British Empire.
Moreover, the team has plans to place a copy of the manuscript in the Icelandic museum Arnastofnun, alongside other legendary sagas. They even have aspirations to showcase a version in iconic locations such as the Pyramids or the Library of Congress, blending gaming culture with global heritage.
How to participate and make history
Players who wish to be a part of this extraordinary project will not only receive a standard version of the epic poem but will also have the chance to contribute to special editions created from their blood. At upcoming Fanfest events, the Icelandic Blood Bank will be on-site, allowing players to donate blood. The unique approach involves collecting a small sample from each donor, which will then be combined to craft the special editions of the poetry volume.
The next Fanfest is scheduled for May 2026, providing ample time for players to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. By participating, players may ensure that a fragment of their contribution remains relevant for the next millennium, creating a lasting legacy within the Eve Online universe.
