Hasbro has announced a $56 million impairment due to the cancellation of several games slated for 2028 and beyond, signaling a shift in its gaming strategy.

Hasbro Cancels Multiple Games, Focuses on Key Franchises

In a significant move, Hasbro has recorded a $56 million impairment related to the cancellation of several games scheduled for release in 2028 and beyond. This decision is part of a broader strategy to refocus the company’s gaming portfolio, prioritizing established franchises and high-potential projects. Despite this setback, Hasbro remains optimistic about its digital games portfolio, with key titles like Exodus and Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons still on track for a 2027 release.

The impairment reflects the company’s ongoing evaluation of its digital games portfolio, aiming to invest in projects with the clearest path to long-term success. Hasbro’s CEO, Chris Cocks emphasized the company’s commitment to its digital future, highlighting the potential of existing projects and partnerships.

Hasbro’s Strategic Shift in Gaming

Hasbro’s decision to cancel several games is part of a broader strategy to focus on major owned franchises and partnerships where the company sees the clearest upside. This approach is similar to recent moves by other major players in the gaming industry, such as Xbox which has also narrowed its internal focus to concentrate on high-potential projects.

The company has cited Magic: The Gathering ArenaMonopoly Go and Baldur’s Gate 3 as examples of successful games in their respective niches. These titles demonstrate the potential for big audience appeal, strong genre fit, franchise potential, and meaningful opportunities beyond the initial game.

The Future of Dungeons & Dragons Games

One of the most significant questions surrounding Hasbro’s gaming strategy is the future of Dungeons & Dragons video games. Following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 developed by Larian Studios Hasbro has been exploring options for a sequel. However, Larian has decided not to move forward with a sequel, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain.

Hasbro has been reported to be working on remakes of older Baldur’s Gate games, but a fresh entry in the series would likely offer the most potential upside. The company has been in talks with various partners for over two years but has yet to secure a deal for a sequel.

The Fate of Other Projects

Among the cancelled projects is a Dungeons and Dragons action-adventure game from Giant Skull led by Stig Asmussen the director of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Hasbro confirmed the cancellation of this deal in May. Additionally, the fate of the G.I. Joe Snake Eyes game remains unclear following the closure of its developer, Atomic Arcade.

Despite these setbacks, Hasbro remains committed to its digital games portfolio. The company is shifting its focus to major owned franchises and partnerships, aiming to build durable digital franchises in areas like MagicD&D and owned platforms. This strategy includes reducing annual spending and concentrating investment on high-conviction owned titles.

As Hasbro navigates this transition, the gaming community will be watching closely to see how the company’s refocused portfolio will shape the future of its digital games. With key titles like Exodus and Warlock still in development, there is potential for significant success in the years to come.
