Saber Interactive's COO Tim Willits shares insights on making AAA games smarter, not harder, with a focus on efficiency and quality.

How Saber Interactive Balances Budget and Quality in AAA Game Production

In the ever-evolving world of video game development, Saber Interactive has carved out a unique niche. The company has gained a reputation for producing high-quality games while maintaining a keen eye on budget management. At the forefront of this approach is Chief Operating Officer Tim Willits, who recently shared his insights on the company’s development philosophy.

Saber Interactive has been making waves with a diverse portfolio of games, from action-packed titles like Turok Origins and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival to simulation games such as SnowRunner and Road Kings. The company’s ability to balance licensed intellectual properties with original content has set it apart in the industry.

Saber Interactive’s Agile Development Philosophy

Willits emphasizes that Saber Interactive’s success stems from a culture of agility and smart resource allocation. Unlike traditional development studios where teams are siloed, Saber encourages a flexible approach where employees work on projects based on need and expertise. This agile methodology allows the company to optimize resources and focus on what truly matters: delivering a quality gaming experience.

“We’re very good at making sure that we scope our projects to focus on the fun and to focus on what really needs to happen,” Willits explains. “I play these other games, and I can see these virtual dollars flying out of the screen, and I can see how much money they spend on the dumbest stuff, and I’m like, ‘Oh, God, that’s expensive.'”

The company’s strategy extends beyond internal processes. Saber Interactive is adept at finding talented individuals in more affordable locations, ensuring that they can tap into a global pool of expertise without compromising on quality. This approach not only reduces costs but also fosters a dynamic work environment where employees can contribute to a variety of projects, from John Wick to Space Marine 3.

The Art of Balancing Multiple Projects

Managing a diverse portfolio of games is no small feat, but Willits likens it to spinning plates. “Sometimes I feel like the guy spinning the plates,” he admits. “And I’m spinning it up and then I see one starting to wobble and I run over. That’s kind-of how we work. We’re a little crazy, but we seem to pull it off.”

Saber Interactive’s ability to juggle multiple projects is a testament to its efficient project management. By identifying passionate leaders for each project and giving them the necessary time and resources, the company ensures that each game receives the attention it deserves. This approach has led to the successful launch of both small-scale games like MudRunner and large AAA titles like Space Marine 2.

“We focus on what’s really important. We focus on the quality experience,” Willits states. “And we’re not afraid to take risks. We’ve had huge success with small games. I mean, look at MudRunner and SnowRunner. SnowRunner was literally made by a handful of people, and it has made hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Embracing Licensed Intellectual Properties

Saber Interactive has a knack for breathing new life into licensed intellectual properties. From classic franchises like Turok to horror icons like Hellraiser the company has shown a remarkable ability to connect with audiences across generations. Willits believes that this approach allows Saber to bridge the generational gap, appealing to both longtime fans and new players.

“We have a good relationship with [IP holder] Universal, so we’re like: ‘Maybe we can build a Turok game with this idea?'” Willits shares. This proactive approach to licensed content has been a cornerstone of Saber Interactive’s success, enabling the company to leverage well-known franchises while infusing them with fresh ideas.

Despite the risks associated with licensed games, Saber Interactive remains committed to these projects. The company’s track record speaks for itself, with titles like Hitman remasters and upcoming projects like Star Wars and Jurassic Park titles demonstrating their ability to deliver on high expectations.

By focusing on smart resource allocation, agile project management, and a commitment to quality, the company has established itself as a leader in the industry. As Tim Willits aptly puts it, “We can just do AAA games smarter.”
