MTCIT invites investors to develop Oman's gaming industry hub

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) in Oman has launched an ambitious initiative to establish the sultanate as a regional hub for the gaming industry. This move is part of a broader strategy to diversify the economy and foster a knowledge-based society, aligning with the goals of Vision 2040.

The ministry has issued a call for expressions of interest (EoI) from local companies and investors to develop, manage, and operate a comprehensive gaming industry hub. This hub aims to create an integrated ecosystem for game developers, e-sports organizations, technology companies, and investors, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital entertainment sector.

Attracting investment and nurturing talent

The proposed hub is expected to play a pivotal role in Oman’s economic diversification efforts. By attracting companies specializing in e-sports, gaming technologies, and digital game development, the initiative aims to create high-value jobs for Omani youth and strengthen the sultanate’s position in the global digital economy.

Interested investors must submit a formal letter requesting participation in the EoI process, along with a copy of their company’s commercial registration certificate. All documents must be submitted in PDF format via email to the ministry’s investment department by August 2.

The global significance of the gaming industry

The gaming industry has evolved into one of the world’s fastest-growing digital sectors, encompassing game development, e-sports competitions, content creation, and advanced technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. By inviting private sector participation, the MTCIT aims to build a vibrant gaming ecosystem capable of attracting investment and nurturing local talent.

This initiative reflects the growing global significance of the gaming industry and Oman’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in digital entertainment and emerging technologies.

The shifting landscape of gaming

While Oman is making strides in the gaming industry, the global gaming landscape is also undergoing significant transformations. From Valve’s Steam Machine to Sony’s shift towards digital distribution and Xbox’s strategic realignments, the industry is rapidly evolving.

The Steam Machine, Valve’s attempt to bridge the gap between PC gaming and the console experience, has faced challenges due to its premium price tag. Despite its impressive design and performance, it struggles to compete with traditional consoles on price, appealing more to dedicated PC enthusiasts.

Sony’s decision to cease producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028 marks a significant shift towards digital distribution. This move is driven by the increasing preference for digital sales among consumers, with digital purchases accounting for nearly 80% of Sony’s full game sales in 2026.

Microsoft’s Xbox division is also navigating a period of significant restructuring, with reported layoffs and a strategic ‘reset’ under new CEO Asha Sharma. The company aims to become more self-reliant in hardware and refocus its content strategy on defining franchises and a reliable pipeline of exclusives.

These developments underscore an accelerating trend towards a digital-first future for the gaming industry. As companies embrace digital distribution, they must address consumer concerns regarding game ownership, the secondhand market, and long-term game preservation.
