The Philippine gaming industry is experiencing significant challenges, with economic pressures and new competitors reshaping the landscape. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) reported a substantial decline in revenues, while industry leader DigiPlus Interactive Corp faces intensifying competition from new entrants.
These developments highlight the evolving dynamics within the gaming sector, as both regulators and private operators adapt to changing market conditions and consumer behaviors.
PAGCOR Reports Significant Revenue Decline
PAGCOR’s first-half revenues for 2026 plummeted by 26.6%, totaling P43.32 billion compared to P59.05 billion in the same period last year. The decline was primarily driven by weaker earnings from gaming operations, particularly the online gambling segment.
Revenues from gaming operations, which remain PAGCOR’s primary revenue source, slipped by 27% to P38.92 billion. The electronic gaming segment, including eGames and eBingo, experienced the most significant drop, with earnings plunging by almost 42% to P18.6 billion from P32 billion in the first half of 2026.
PAGCOR chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco attributed the decline to the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which dampened consumer spending during the first quarter. The recent uptick in global fuel prices has also contributed to ongoing uncertainties.
Despite the revenue slump, PAGCOR remains committed to nation-building, having poured P30.16 billion into various initiatives during the first six months of 2026. However, the regulator’s net operating income declined by 35.1% to P31.75 billion, while net income fell by 85.3% to P1.58 billion.
DigiPlus Faces Intensifying Competition
DigiPlus Interactive Corp, the industry leader in online gaming, is facing increasing pressure from new competitors entering the market. The launch of online gaming platforms by integrated resort operators is expected to impact DigiPlus’s margins and market share.
According to Abacus Securities Corp, the arrival of new players, such as Bloomberry’s Solaire Online and FUnaloMAX, as well as platforms operated by Hann Casino Resort, Newport World Resorts, Okada Manila, and NUSTAR through PhilWeb Corp, will intensify competition in the online gaming space.
Despite the growing competition, DigiPlus retains an edge in terms of product quality and user base. Analysts suggest that the company’s superior platform and wider user engagement will help it maintain its market leadership in the short term.
However, the increasing competition is likely to force DigiPlus to invest more in advertising and promotions to retain its customer base. Abacus Securities expects the company’s second-quarter gross gaming revenue to follow a similar trend to the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2026, resulting in a 20% to 25% decline in revenues year-on-year.
Richard Laneda, a senior research analyst at COL Financial Group Inc, noted that while new entrants will affect competition, DigiPlus will still have an advantage due to its larger user base, better platform, and superior user experience.
