The Ultimate Edition of GTA6 is overwhelmingly popular among pre-orders, with 89% of buyers opting for the premium version.

Sensor Tower Reveals GTA6 Ultimate Edition's Overwhelming Pre-Order Popularity

The gaming world is abuzz with the latest data from Sensor Tower which reveals that an astonishing 89% of pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA6) are for the Ultimate Edition priced at $100, rather than the standard edition at $80. This trend is consistent across both PlayStation and Xbox platforms, with 90% of Xbox buyers choosing the Ultimate Edition compared to 88.5% on PlayStation.

This data supports recent statements by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick who noted that pre-orders are heavily favoring the premium edition. The figures have surprised industry experts, including Karl Kontus SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, who has never seen such a high premium share before.

The Unprecedented Demand for GTA6 Ultimate Edition

Kontus points out that special editions typically perform well during the pre-order period, as they attract the most dedicated fans who are willing to pay more for additional content. However, the 90% premium share for GTA6 is unprecedented. Historically, premium shares for games tend to range between 10-20%. Kontus expects the share of Ultimate Edition sales to decline over time as more casual players purchase the game, but it will likely remain significantly above the industry standard.

The success of the Ultimate Edition is attributed to its extensive list of exclusive perks, including access to vehicle customization shops and additional content that is not available in the standard edition. Kontus notes that the pricing difference between the $80 standard edition and the $100 Ultimate Edition is not substantial, and the additional content justifies the higher price. He even suggests that Rockstar might have left money on the table by not offering a $150 edition.

The Impact of Marketing and Casual Players

Kontus believes that the split between the standard and Ultimate Editions at launch will be influenced by how effectively the GTA6 marketing campaign attracts casual players before the release date. He expects that most pre-orders will come in the last week before launch, with the split likely to be closer to 50/50. However, given the unique nature of GTA6, predicting its performance is challenging.

As for the total number of units GTA6 will sell at launch, Kontus finds it difficult to predict. Using normal pre-order trajectories, the current 4 million pre-orders would suggest 40 million+ pre-orders by launch. However, Zelnick has noted that GTA6 is in a league of its own, making it hard to apply standard benchmarks. Kontus suspects that pre-orders are frontloaded and may fall short of the 40 million mark, potentially landing around 25 million units. This would still be an unprecedented pre-order performance, translating to approximately $2 billion in sales by launch.

The Broader Implications for the Gaming Industry

The success of the GTA6 Ultimate Edition has broader implications for the gaming industry. It highlights the willingness of dedicated fans to invest in premium content and the potential for high-margin sales through special editions. This trend could influence future game releases and marketing strategies, as developers seek to capitalize on the demand for exclusive content.

Sensor Tower has created a GTA6 sales tracker, which currently shows the game has been pre-ordered 4.3 million times, with 77% of pre-orders on PlayStation versus 23% on Xbox. Analysts have estimated that GTA6 could sell between 30-35 million to over 50 million units in its first year, with some suggesting a ‘blow out sales scenario’ could see the game closing in on 60 million sales.
