Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 Pushed to 2027 Amid GTA 6 Concerns

Squadron 42, the highly anticipated single-player component of Star Citizen, has been delayed again, this time to the second quarter of 2027. Chris Roberts explains the decision to avoid the media frenzy around GTA 6.

Star Citizen's Squadron 42 Pushed to 2027 Amid GTA 6 Concerns

In a move that has stirred the gaming community, Cloud Imperium Games has announced another delay for Squadron 42 the single-player module of Star Citizen. The game, which was initially slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2026, will now launch in the second quarter of 2027. This decision comes as a strategic maneuver to avoid the overwhelming media attention expected to surround the release of GTA 6.

The announcement was made by Chris Roberts founder and CEO of Cloud Imperium and Roberts Space Industries (RSI). Roberts emphasized that the delay is not due to development issues but rather a calculated decision to ensure Squadron 42 receives the attention it deserves. “We have invested twelve years of blood, sweat, and tears into this game,” Roberts stated, highlighting the significance of the project as the spiritual successor to the iconic Wing Commander series.

The Impact of GTA 6 on Squadron 42’s Release

Roberts explained that despite GTA 6 not launching on PC in November, the media and content creators will likely focus heavily on Rockstar’s title, leaving little room for other games. “There is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6,” he said. This strategic postponement aims to give Squadron 42 a better chance to shine in a less crowded market.

The decision to delay Squadron 42 has raised eyebrows, especially considering the game’s lengthy development cycle. Star Citizen, the multiplayer component of the project, has been in development since and has already raised over 1 billion dollars through crowdfunding. The delay of Squadron 42 adds to the growing concerns about the project’s timeline and the ability of Cloud Imperium to deliver on its promises.

A Glimpse into the Future: October Beta Test

In a bid to keep the community engaged, Roberts announced that a closed beta test for Squadron 42 will take place on October 9 and 10. This beta will be limited to a select group of early supporters and long-time content creators of Star Citizen. The test aims to gather valuable feedback and generate excitement ahead of the game’s official release.

Roberts acknowledged the disappointment among fans who were looking forward to playing Squadron 42 by the end of 2026. However, he reassured the community that this delay is in the best interest of the project. “It is the best thing for the project as it is truly something special and so needs the opportunity to have the focus of the wider gaming world,” he said.

The Road Ahead for Star Citizen

Despite the delay, Cloud Imperium Games remains committed to the development of both Star Citizen and Squadron 42. Roberts highlighted that the studio has a substantial team working on the projects, with resources split between the two games. “We have a further 611 staff in development across our four studios,” he noted, emphasizing the scale of the operation.

The delay of Squadron 42 serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by ambitious gaming projects. As the gaming community awaits further updates, the strategic decision to postpone the release of Squadron 42 underscores the importance of timing and market conditions in the competitive world of video game launches.
