Modern armies have long recognized the value of virtual training. The US Army, for instance, launched America’s Army in 2002, a video game designed to model combat situations. However, the new generation of companies like Skyral is offering something more sophisticated: digital twins of real cities and battlefields. These models allow soldiers to train on the consequences of their decisions, from the impact of a missile strike on a crowded street to the effects of knocking out a power station during winter.
Skyral’s Digital Twins: A Game Changer
Skyral’s platform is designed to recreate entire cities and countries, providing a faithful and usable model of real-world environments. This approach is less about familiarizing fighter pilots with aircraft handling and more about training soldiers and tacticians on the broader implications of their actions. Skyral began with virtual worlds developed by Improbable Worlds Limited, a software company focused on gaming engines and the metaverse. Over time, they built a platform that integrates layers of information to create a faithful model of real cities and battlefields.
Power Size Technologies: Complementary Innovations
Power Size Technologies, another company working with the UK military, is focusing on virtual models of energy systems. These models range from the batteries in a tank to the solar panels in a desert camp. The company offers these simulations to militaries to help them decide how to electrify their equipment. This technology is particularly applicable to the military, where procurement is expensive and decisions are political and time-consuming.
Wiktor Dotter, the chief executive of Power Size Technologies, emphasizes the importance of connecting technology development to usability. He suggests that simulations can help the Ministry of Defence test new ideas, such as solar panels in the desert or hybrid battle tanks, without the need for expensive and time-consuming trials.
