Unknown Worlds reveals Subnautica 2's upcoming features and improvements

Subnautica 2 has made a significant splash since its release, with over 4 million players exploring the ocean planet Proteus. Developer Unknown Worlds has been diligently gathering feedback and is now ready to share some exciting updates and future plans for the game.

The studio recently published the first in a series of developer video blogs, featuring design lead Anthony Gallegos. Gallegos shared that the team is already hard at work on several really exciting smaller updatesincluding enhancements to the Biomod system, wreck improvements, and changes to Blight encounters.

Upcoming Features and Improvements

One of the key areas of focus is the Biomod system. Players can expect new early-game Biomod options and the ability to unlock more passive slots. Additionally, wrecks will receive unspecified improvements, and Blight encounters will be adjusted to make parasite aggression levels more obvious.

A priority system for voiceover is also in the works, ensuring that players always hear the most important information. Furthermore, players will soon be able to replay voice logs from the PDA, adding a new layer of immersion to the game.

Social Features and Co-op Enhancements

For those who enjoy exploring the depths with friends, new social features are on the horizon. Proximity voice chat is incoming, along with new character customization options and emotes. This means players can give their pals an encouraging thumbs up while navigating the treacherous waters of Proteus.

Unknown Worlds has also reiterated its commitment to adding all new content to players’ existing saves, so there’s no need to start afresh each time an update arrives. This is great news for those who have already invested a significant amount of time into the game.

The First Major Content Drop

The studio is working on Subnautica 2’s first major early access content drop, which will include a new region. This area, home to the Collector Leviathan, promises new creatures, resources, and story progression. It will also introduce a new chassis, bringing back one of the most requested player experiences.

Gallegos teased, Get ready to get stompyhinting at the exciting new mechanics and creatures players can expect. He also warned that the first major update is going to be the scariest the game has been yetadding, and I can’t wait for you to try it.

While there’s no specific timeframe for these updates, the previously released roadmap provides a clear picture of the order in which Unknown Worlds intends to roll them out. With 4 million players eagerly awaiting these enhancements, the future of Subnautica 2 looks brighter than ever.

In other news, publisher Krafton’s CEO might not be as enthusiastic about Subnautica 2’s success, given the game’s smash hit status means the company is now facing a $250 million earnout it had reportedly tried to wiggle out of by seeking legal advice from ChatGPT.
