Asobo Studio's Eric Chort discusses AI and creativity in game development

In an industry increasingly embracing generative AI tools, French developer Asobo Studio stands out with its deliberate choice to forgo this technology. Known for creating the critically acclaimed Plague Tale series and Microsoft Flight SimulatorAsobo’s approach offers a unique perspective on maintaining creativity and authenticity in game development.

The studio’s stance was recently articulated by Eric Chortproducer of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacyduring a press event. Asobo’s teams have consistently delivered high-quality games with relatively modest resources, making their position particularly noteworthy. For instance, A Plague Tale: Innocence was developed by a team of approximately 40 people, while A Plague Tale: Requiem and the upcoming Resonance were created by teams of around 70 members.

Asobo’s philosophy on AI and creativity

Chort emphasized that Asobo’s decision to avoid generative AI is a conscious choice driven by their commitment to originality. ‘So we don’t use it; we don’t want [to],’ Chort stated. ‘We think that our games are working with the fans and with the community and with the critics because they are original, because we have unique settings, unique characters, artistic direction.’ He expressed concern that AI could jeopardize these aspects that make their games special.

The producer also addressed the idea that smaller teams might need AI to compete with larger studios. ‘We don’t see AI as a solution for that,’ Chort explained. Instead, Asobo focuses on making their games more organic and efficient in their production processes. For example, they maintain a linear game structure, which allows them to achieve high production values without resorting to AI solutions that might compromise their creative vision.

Chort’s comments reflect a broader philosophy at Asobo. ‘We prefer not to use it at all and keep our creativity,’ he said. The studio values its team dynamics, with many long-time veterans working alongside younger talent. This family-like environment contributes to their unique approach to game development.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy’s impressive production values

Having played Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacyit’s clear that Asobo’s approach yields remarkable results. The game’s production values are exceptional, with intricate world details, character animations, and performances that rival big-budget blockbusters. This achievement underscores Asobo’s ability to deliver high-quality games without relying on generative AI tools.

The upcoming title, set to release on 27th October on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Game Pass, marks a bold departure for the series while maintaining the distinctive Plague Tale identity. The game’s narrative follows Sophiaa young plunderer unraveling the secrets of her past on the treacherous Minotaur’s Island. Players will navigate deadly trials, solve puzzles, and confront a terrifying creature tied to an ancient curse.

Asobo’s stance on AI is particularly relevant in today’s gaming landscape, where the technology’s adoption is both widespread and controversial. Recent incidents, such as the backlash against the new Crazy Taxi game’s AI disclaimer and legendary designer Hideo Kojima‘s involvement in an AI-generated Prada video, highlight the ongoing debate about AI’s role in creative industries. However, as director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz of The Blood of Dawnwalker suggested, there might be ways to use AI for mundane tasks without compromising a project’s creative integrity.

The release of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

The game’s release date was initially announced for 27th Augustbut it has since been moved to 27th October. Priced at $59.99it offers a compelling narrative that blends combat, myth, and fate. The game’s setting on Minotaur’s Island promises a fresh experience within the established Plague Tale universe.

Asobo Studio’s approach to game development serves as a reminder that creativity and authenticity can thrive without the use of generative AI tools. Their upcoming release, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacyis a testament to their commitment to delivering high-quality, original experiences for players.
