The Chicago Cubs found their offensive groove in a big way during a recent doubleheader against the New York Mets. Dansby Swanson who had been struggling at the plate, exploded for a monumental performance that revitalized the team’s hitting.
Swanson’s breakout game was a turning point for the Cubs, who had been searching for consistent offense from their lineup. His incredible display of power and clutch hitting set the tone for a dominant series against the Mets.
Swanson’s remarkable resurgence
After a lengthy slump that had fans and analysts questioning his role, Swanson silenced the critics with an explosive performance. In the first game of the doubleheader, he hit two home runs, including a grand slam driving in seven runs to lead the Cubs to a 10-3 victory. He followed that up with three more hits and four RBIs in the second game, a 10-5 Cubs win.
Swanson’s offensive outburst raised his batting average by more than 25 points, from.175 to.202. His performance was a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome his struggles. ‘I was never doubting what I was capable of doing,’ Swanson said. ‘It was just a matter of finding the consistent work that’s going to help that show up.’
The Cubs’ offensive revival
The Cubs’ offensive resurgence wasn’t just about Swanson’s heroics. The entire lineup has been contributing, with multiple players stepping up to support Pete Crow-Armstrong who has been on fire in June. The Cubs have scored more than three runs in 10 of their last 12 games, a stark contrast to their earlier struggles.
Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the importance of having the entire roster contribute. ‘We have to get large parts of our entire roster contributing,’ he said. ‘That’s how every team puts together good stretches of baseball.’
Swanson’s performance was a perfect example of how the Cubs’ offense has become more balanced. With Swanson and other hitters stepping up, the Cubs have shown that they can be a formidable force when everyone is contributing.
A lively atmosphere at Citi Field
The first game of the doubleheader was made even more memorable by a group of Norwegian soccer fans who brought their energy and enthusiasm to Citi Field. The red-clad supporters, donning viking helmets, filled the stadium with their chants and songs, creating a unique and lively atmosphere.
Swanson, whose wife Mallory Swanson plays for the U.S. women’s national soccer team, appreciated the fans’ spirit. ‘I loved it,’ he said. ‘They were so in unison and so loud for maybe a couple hundred people. Could you imagine if this was 80,000 of them? That’d be incredible.’
The Cubs’ victory was a welcome change after a rough early-summer stretch. The team has found their footing of late, winning eight of their last 11 games. Second baseman Nico Hoerner attributed the team’s success to their confidence and belief in themselves. ‘This position-player group is incredibly strong and very confident,’ he said.
