The Wauwatosa East High School football team has made an incredible comeback, returning to their home field at Hart Park just one year after a 1,000-year flood nearly derailed their season. The historic flood in August 2026 left the field submerged and the surrounding area in ruins, testing the resilience of the team and the community.
The journey back to the field was not easy. Head coach Tom Swittel initially feared the worst when he saw the extent of the damage. The floodwaters had risen so high that he thought all their equipment in the locker room building was destroyed. However, as the waters receded, the team discovered that their equipment was miraculously spared, giving them a glimmer of hope.
The Road to Recovery
The team faced numerous challenges in the aftermath of the flood. They had to clear out the locker room and move their operations to the school. Limited field availability pushed practices late into the evening, and the Red Raiders were forced to play their home games at rival Wauwatosa West. Senior Sam Paulsen admitted that playing at their rival’s field was difficult, but the team’s determination never wavered.
Senior quarterback Louie Fox credited Coach Swittel for keeping the team focused during the tough times. The outpouring of community support also played a crucial role in helping the program overcome what Swittel called a tragedy. The team’s adversity brought them closer together, and they emerged stronger and more united.
A New Season Begins
With football back at Hart Park the team is more grateful than ever for the opportunity to practice on their home field. The experience has changed how they view every practice, making them appreciate the field and the game even more. The community’s support has been instrumental in their recovery, and the team is determined to make the most of the new season.
