Dolan and Mamdani Feud as Knicks Game 4 Watch Party is Scrapped

Tensions rise as Knicks owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani clash over the cancellation of the Game 4 watch party, leaving fans in the lurch.

Dolan and Mamdani Feud as Knicks Game 4 Watch Party is Scrapped

The New York Knicks‘ historic playoff run has taken an unexpected turn, with team owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani engaged in a public feud over the cancellation of the Game 4 watch party outside Madison Square Garden.

The dispute began when plans for a watch party ahead of Game 3 were scrapped due to President Donald Trump’s attendance. Dolan then decided to cancel the Game 4 watch party, citing the city’s restriction to only 1,000 ticketed fans, which he deemed unfair to the thousands of other fans eager to celebrate.

The Feud Escalates

Dolan expressed his frustration in a rare interview with WFANstating that the city’s decision to limit the watch party to 1,000 fans was akin to “giving us the gift of allowing us to screen 999 people and tell 20,000 no.” He argued that the city and the police commissioner were trying to “kill” the celebration, emphasizing that the Knicks’ victories belong to all New Yorkers.

Mayor Mamdani responded on Xclarifying that MSG had applied for a permit for 500-999 fans and that Dolan had chosen to cancel the watch party. Mamdani encouraged Knicks fans to show up and support their team, regardless of the official watch party.

The City’s Perspective

The city defended its decision, stating that the security measures were similar to those used for other large events like July 4th or New Year’s Eve celebrations. Mayor Mamdani urged fans to celebrate responsibly and look out for one another. The NYPD confirmed that a permit for 1,000 people had been approved but noted that it was up to MSG to decide whether to proceed with the watch party.

Dolan criticized the city’s handling of the situation, suggesting that the mayor’s office and the police commissioner lacked experience in managing such events. He also implied that those in the mayor’s office were not true Knicks fans.

The Impact on Fans

The cancellation of the watch party has left many fans disappointed, as they had hoped to be part of the celebration outside the Mecca of basketball. The city’s watch party in Bryant Park for Game 3 had attracted an estimated 7,000 fans but was marred by violence and rowdiness after the Knicks’ loss.

As the Knicks inch closer to their first NBA title since 1973, the feud between Dolan and Mamdani has overshadowed the team’s historic run. Fans are left wondering if there will be a watch party for Game 5, which is scheduled to take place in San Antonio on Saturday.

The uncertainty surrounding the watch party has added another layer of complexity to an already intense playoff atmosphere. As the Knicks continue their quest for championship glory, the focus remains on the court, where the team’s performance will ultimately determine their legacy.
