Epic games has unveiled ambitious plans for its upcoming Unreal Engine 6with a focus on cross-game asset portability. This innovation aims to allow players to use their Fortnite cosmetics in other Unreal Engine games and vice versa, creating a more interconnected gaming ecosystem.

The announcement was made during Epic’s State of Unreal 2026 livestream, where development team lead Marcus Wassmer shared insights into the engine’s future capabilities. Wassmer emphasized the potential for cross-promotion and portable player valueleveraging the principles of Metcalfe’s Law to connect gaming experiences and social graphs.

Fortnite Cosmetics as the First Proof Point

Wassmer highlighted that Fortnite cosmetics will serve as the initial demonstration of this portability. The base system will be moved to an open UE6 moduleenabling developers to integrate Fortnite outfits into their own games and create outfits for Fortnite. This approach aims to recognize players’ time and spending more effectively, fostering a shared economy for smart assets.

“In the end, this isn’t really a Fortnite story. It’s about proving that such a mature, complex system can work at scale,” Wassmer stated. He emphasized that every game adopting these systems will immediately benefit from them, marking a significant shift in the gaming industry.

Unreal Engine 6: A New Era for Game Development

Unreal Engine 6 is still in the early stages of development, with early access testing scheduled to begin at the end of 2027. The full release is expected 12 to 18 months thereafter. Key features include built-in generative AI large language model integration, support for a larger number of players in games, and enhanced cross-platform compatibility.

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney hinted at the potential for games to support thousands, if not millions, of players. The focus seems to be on making games work seamlessly across multiple platforms without requiring significant alterations, prioritizing functionality over flashy graphical features.

Wassmer concluded by stating that UE6 will change how games are made but emphasized that the heart of the industry remains the developers, filmmakers, and the Unreal Engine community who bring these innovations to life.
