In an exciting turn of events for retro gaming enthusiasts, Navinosuke: The Yo-kai Buster a monster-taming RPG originally conceived over two decades ago for the Game Boy Advance is finally set to launch in 2027. This 2D RPG developed by Kohachi Studio a team of former members from the renowned Nazca studio known for the Metal Slug series, will be published by Happinet on nintendo switch and PC via Steam.
The Evolution of Navinosuke: From GPS-based Concept to Modern RPG
The story of Navinosuke: The Yo-kai Buster is as intriguing as the game itself. Initially, the game was designed to utilize a GPS unit that could connect to the Game Boy Advance. This innovative concept aimed to integrate geolocation into the gameplay, a feature that would later become popular with games like Pokémon GO. However, the GPS unit was eventually scrapped, and the game was reworked to function without the geolocation mechanics. Despite these efforts, the project was shelved for reasons that remain undisclosed.
Fast forward to 2026, and the game has been revived by Kohachi Studio. The new version retains much of the original pixel art but features a redesigned user interface and updated gameplay systems. Initially announced exclusively for the Nintendo Switch with a 2026 release date, Happinet has since confirmed that the game will also be available on Steam, with both versions set to launch in 2027.
A Journey Through Ancient Japan with Navinosuke
Navinosuke: The Yo-kai Buster follows the adventures of Navinosuke a mechanical onmyoji traversing a fictional version of ancient Japan. The game’s narrative revolves around resolving supernatural incidents caused by yokai creatures deeply rooted in Japanese folklore. Players will engage in strategic turn-based battles and attempt to recruit these creatures to join their cause.
The game boasts an impressive roster of over 200 unique yokai, each inspired by Japanese mythology. From the Nekomata an aged cat with supernatural abilities, to the Gashadokuro a titanic skeleton formed from the unburied dead’s grudges, the game offers a rich tapestry of creatures to encounter and recruit. This focus on authentic folklore sets Navinosuke apart from other creature-collecting RPGs.
